Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:53:03 GMT

Welcome to the race to the bottom for the third National League wild card. The finish should be thrilling, if not pretty, and it’s precisely what Major League Baseball signed up for when it expanded the postseason to six teams per league before last season.Engaged fanbases. Heated races. Mediocre play. The San Francisco Giants are a flawed baseball team. That much has been on display for the better part of three months, now, and was only made clearer as they went 1-6 on their past road trip to drop them all the way back to .500.But the good news, Giants fans, is that so are Diamondbacks. And the Marlins. And the Reds. And one of those teams will be playing in October.“It’s probably gonna come down to the last day,” outfielder Mike Yastrzemski said of the race last week.In fact, the competition has been so underwhelming, that multiple people within the Giants organization suggested that they wouldn’t count out the Padres, who had just taken them to town fo...

Jaime Mogollan, 40, of San Bruno, remains behind bars in lieu of $300,000 bail. A preliminary hearing for Mogollan concluded on Wednesday after prosecutors presented evidence of sexual assaults that allegedly occurred this summer. During one incident in August, a 29-year-old Millbrae woman was wearing headphones and walking along Spur Trail. Surveillance cameras positioned at the trail's entrance showed Mogollan following the woman for three blocks, prosecutors said. Mogollan "came up behind her, pulled her pants down ... and grabbed her buttocks. He then reached between her legs," prosecutors wrote. The victim struggled to get away and fell to the ground. The assailant fled from the area on a mountain bicycle. A few days later, a 38-year-old woman was targeted on Poplar Avenue, investigators said. The woman w...

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill aimed at clearing the way for construction of a controversial student housing project in a historic Berkeley park. The University of California, Berkeley, plans to build a $312 million housing project for about 1,100 of its students at the 3-acre (1.2-hectare) People's Park. Gavin Newsom’s office. On Thursday, the California Senate gave final approval to a bill legalizing certain psychedelics for people who are 21 or older. If Newsom signs the bill, it will go into effect in 2025 and make it legal to possess or grow plant-based psychedelics, including psychedelic mushrooms.Newsom has not said where he stands on the bill, but he has mostly been a critic against the war on drugs, having been a leading voice to legalize cannabis in California and reduce nonviolent offenses like drug crimes to misdemeanors rather than felonies. Last year, however, he vetoed a bill that would have allowed three California cities to operate supervised drug-consumption sites in efforts to combat fatal overdoses.“We respect the legislative process and don’t typically comment on pending legislation,” a Newsom spokesperson told Marijuana Moment on Thursday. “The governor will evaluate the bill on its merits when it re...
