No. 1 vs. No. 2: Royce Lewis eager to face Hunter Greene, pitcher selected after him in draft

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 18:04:14 GMT

CINCINNATI — The Lewis family was getting ready for a watch party, still preparing their food, when Major League Baseball’s amateur draft came on the television six years ago. With the Twins’ pick, No. 1 overall, set to be announced, only half the family was even tuning into the draft. And that, Royce Lewis said, was more out of general curiosity than expecting that he might be the pick.He was expecting the Twins, who he said had seemed less interested in him than the San Diego Padres, who had the No. 3 pick, and Atlanta Braves, who selected fifth, to select “anyone but me.”And at that time, June 2017, there was another high school kid in Southern California that many thought might be taken with the No. 1 pick. That kid was Hunter Greene. Wednesday, the two are set to square off for the first time as major leaguers in Cincinnati with Greene taking the mound for the Reds. The Twins, it turned out, were plenty interested in Lewis. To the shock of the infielder and his family, they...

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) - A Peoria fire captain told a Peoria County jury that he and his partner had to do a "double take" when they found a woman's body in a fully engulfed house on Peoria's East bluff nearly two years ago.Capt. Frank Bivert, a 25-year veteran of the department, said he was one of the first firefighters to arrive at 1021 E. Virginia Ave. He and the other firefighter busted open the home's front door and due to the extreme heat and smoke, searched through the house by crawling on the ground and using their sense of feel to "clear the house." Broncos roundtable: After 0-2 start, how many wins will Denver have at its bye week?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 18:04:14 GMT

Parker Gabriel, Broncos beat reporterLife’s swell up in Boulder, where Deion Sanders and his guys find themselves 3-0 and ranked No. 19 in the country. Nobody saw that one coming, but we’re seeing it now — by the millions. You know another thing we didn’t see? An 0-2 start for Sean Payton’s Broncos. None of us thought this was a great team, but if I’m not mistaken, all three of us picked Denver to win each of its first two games. So, let’s give the prognosticating another try. How many wins will Payton’s team have when its Week 9 bye rolls around? The schedule from here: at Miami, at Chicago, vs. the Aaron Rodgers-less New York Jets, at Kansas City (Thursday night), vs. Green Bay and at Kansas City.I can see maybe a 2-6. The Bears aren’t good, and a split between Rodgers’ old team and his new one — neither of whom he’s playing for after tearing his Achilles — seems attainable. That’s not great, but 1-7 would be ...

Alex Singleton not pushing panic button over Broncos’ slow start on defense: “We’re just still coming together”

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 18:04:14 GMT

Washington’s first possession of the second half Sunday lasted just five plays, but it showed a bit of several different problems the Broncos defense has encountered early on this season. When quarterback Sam Howell had nowhere to go with the ball on third-and-10, Randy Gregory flashed up the middle but couldn’t get home. Howell escaped, caught Jonathon Cooper committing too far to the middle and bent toward the sideline. Then one of Denver’s surest tacklers, Alex Singleton, took a rare bad angle and could only dive at Howell’s feet as he scampered for 11 and a first down.To compound matters, Fabian Moreau got called for holding in the secondary — one of 12 penalties on the Broncos defense already through two games — tacking on five more yards. Then Brian Robinson powered up the middle for 11 yards. From the left hash, Washington’s offensive line washed both of Denver’s down defensive linemen plus Gregory past the right hash mark by the time Robinson scampered by and dragged Jos...
