Sunnyvale murder suspect identified 44 years after the crime, police say SUNNYVALE — For nearly 44 years, Estella Elena Mena’s death was a mystery. On Oct. 27, 1979, the 18-year-old woman was working as a security guard in the lobby of a Sunnyvale business when she was brutally stabbed multiple times during an attempted sexual assault, leading to her death at a hospital later that night.According to police, there were no suspects or leads in the homicide case — until now.The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety announced Thursday that Mena’s alleged killer has been identified through forensic testing as Samuel Silva, who was also 18-years-old at the time of the slaying.According to authorities, a sample of male blood was found at the original crime scene but a positive identification was unable to be made for decades. Serbia and Kosovo leaders break off talks without result despite EU pressure BRUSSELS (AP) — The leaders of Serbia and Kosovo broke off talks on Thursday without signaling progress after European Union leaders weighed in to help them bridge their differences and start enacting an agreement they endorsed several months ago.Shortly after a series of meetings in Brussels ended on Thursday evening – some involving the leaders of France, Germany and Italy – Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic began trading blame for the lack of progress, much as they have done for months. The two men deeply distrust each other. Kurti said that Vucic had refused to sign their February agreement aimed at normalizing their bitter relations as well as an action plan for making the deal work.“Acceptance entails a signature; only a signature entails acceptance and guarantees implementation,” Kurti said in a statement.Vucic dismissed that claim as “tricks,” saying “there was no question of signing or not signing.”“Someone is playing games to shift the...

Orban doubles down at EU summit to defend meeting Putin. One leader calls it a very wrong message BRUSSELS (AP) — If a warm handshake with Russian President Vladimir Putin weren’t provocative enough, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban went into an EU summit Thursday saying he was right to meet the EU’s foremost enemy and that most of the other leaders were wrong.Orban characterized himself as the only one actively seeking peace in Ukraine, though his controversial stance on Russia appears to have gained an ally within the EU with the addition of new Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, with both threatening to obstruct EU aid to Ukraine, much of which requires unanimity amid the 27 nations. Most EU leaders weren’t taking it. “It’s really more than strange to see that we start to flirt with the regime who is committing very cruel atrocities,” said Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda. “It sends a very wrong message to anybody.” As the EU leaders held their traditional fall summit in Brussels, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined by video link, exhorting the bloc to c...
