Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 04:33:31 GMT

DENVER — Max Scherzer has accomplished a lot in his 16-year, Hall-of-Fame-worthy career, but one of the few things that eluded him was a win at Coors Field.Scherzer (4-2) finally conquered that mountain Friday night in Denver, pitching the Mets to a 5-2 win in the first game of a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies. It was a vintage performance from the right-hander, who went seven innings for the first time this season in the win – his first in Colorado in six tries.Scherzer only allowed one earned run on six hits and struck out eight. He got 19 swings and misses and did not allow a walk, which was also a season-best mark. After a slow start to the season, a suspension and some nagging injuries, Scherzer has allowed only two earned runs over his last three starts. He’s looking a lot more like his old self.Ryan McMahon led off the second inning with a home run and Scherzer didn’t allow another hit until the fifth. He had runners on the corners in th...

U.S. weather movement slows due to “blocking pattern” aloft; rain-free high pressure locked in for Memorial Day weekend in Chicago with incoming high/mid-level clouds—temperatures cycling higher

Mid-continent atmospheric blocking pattern is to stall major weather systems in place over the coming week setting the stage for a Memorial Day weekend of warming temps and rain-free weather in Chicago within a building dome of warm air. Day-to-day temp increases are in store here with highs flirting with 90-degrees Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next weekThe most important rule of thumb as ATMOSPHERIC BLOCKING PATTERNS come together is what’s happening across the central United States: the weather system in control as the blocking pattern gets underway is likely to stick around. Blocking patterns by their very nature slow the movement of weather systems. In the case of Chicago and the Midwest, we find ourselves smack dab in the middle of a sprawling Canadian high pressure. We had Friday afternoon relative humidities as low as 22%, about as dry as it gets this time of year. One of baseball’s oldest axioms — and one often tinged with humor — asserts that when a player is playing out of his usual position, the ball will find him.So when Saints catcher Tony Wolters took the field at second base on Thursday night, he knew what was coming. Saints manager Toby Gardenhire knew what was coming. And it happened with the first batter.Saints starter Aaron Sanchez got Omaha’s leadoff man to hit a soft, looping fly ball to the right of second. With the setting sun directly in his eyes, Wolters started back, took a couple steps in and made a lunging grab before the ball hit the ground.“I found it at the last second,” Wolters said.Meanwhile, in the dugout, Gardenhire and infield coach Tyler Smarslok were “dying laughing.”“I told Smars right before the pitch: ‘Watch, they’re going to hit a missile right to Tony and he’s going to screw it up,’ ” Gardenhire said. “But then the guy blooped it, which was almost worse.”The odyssey was only beginning. With two outs in the s...
